Want a Cold War Bunker?

A nuclear bunker, built by the British Army to withstand a nuclear attack, is currently on auction on eBay.  It’s a rare opportunity to own a piece of Cold War history, according to the listing — and it happens to be set on one of the most scenic parts of the English countryside.

The winning bidder will get the bunker, with some original equipment, and about 2,756 square feet of property near the town of Wakefield, in West Yorkshire.

The bunker isn’t the first piece of Cold War real estate put up for sale on eBay.   In 2007, the owner of a U.S. Titan missile base in Washington State put it up for auction on eBay at an asking price of $1.8 million — missiles not included.

That one – like the famous jet airplane that former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin once listed on the site – failed to find a buyer. The bunker, however, has sparked a bidding frenzy.

The bid price had reached £25,200.00 ($37,681.02) at the time of this posting, with 44 bids and five more days to run in the auction. News media around the world have picked up the story, which may account for the relatively high number of bids.

Access is via a metal hatch and 15ft ladder, which lead to two rooms: one for the chemical toilet. The other is a 15 ft x 7½ ft room formerly intended to be used as a monitoring post in the event of a nuclear attack. Best of all, there is no Council Tax to pay on this property.”

Note:  When the auction ended, the bunker sold for $31,037.11 U.S. dollars.
