eBay Announces New Seller Rules
In a two-part move to improve buyer satisfaction, eBay recently modified the rules sellers must follow to list items on the world’s largest online auction site.
Sellers who list items on eBay – whether individual sellers or eBay consignment stores like Easysale – are expected to consistently provide service that result in a high level of buyer satisfaction.
Sellers are expected to:
- Charge reasonable shipping and handling costs.
- Specify shipping costs and handling time in the listing.
- Follow through on their published return policy.
- Respond to buyers’ questions promptly.
- Be helpful, friendly, and professional throughout a transaction.
- Make sure the item is delivered to the buyer as described in the listing.

Detailed seller ratings are eBay’s method of tracking buyer satisfaction. Recently, eBay announced changes in these detailed seller ratings that take effect in April, 2010. Sellers who fail to meet new performance standards after that time risk being banned from the site. Specifically, sellers must maintain higher detailed seller ratings (as a percentage of overall transactions), and the fewer low buyer ratings will be allowed. One of the reasons that buyers are willing to bid more for items listed by eBay consignment stores is the fact that they know they are dealing with a business that must meet far stricter eBay rules than individual sellers. For example, eBay consignment stores must obtain certain types of insurance, maintain high feedback ratings, and agree to a strict code of conduct that protects both consignors and eBay buyers.
