Donate to Charity with your eBay Sales
This time of year many people’s thoughts turn to giving, not only to their loved ones but to their favorite charities as well. At Easysale, your neighborhood eBay store in Dallas, we offer special selling programs to Metroplex nonprofits who would like to use our easy and efficient eBay auction consignment services to raise money for their respective missions. EBay’s Giving Works program is another option for individual sellers who would like to donate a percentage of their eBay listing sales to their chosen charity. It takes little extra effort on your part but can make a big difference to many organizations, especially in this time of great need.
Here’s how it works:
Begin the usual process of setting up your eBay listing.
- Under “Choose how you’d like to sell your item,” scroll down to the section entitled, “Participate in eBay Giving Works.” You can choose the nonprofits highlighted in that section or select another from eBay’s list of over 17,000 certified nonprofits. Don’t see your nonprofit? Invite them to join the program using eBay’s form.
- Choose the percentage of your sale that you would like to donate to the charity. You can donate from 10-100% of the final selling price; a minimum donation of $1 is required.

- Accept the eBay Giving Works Terms and Conditions.
- Decide if you would like to share your contact information with the nonprofit that will benefit from your eBay sale.
- Complete your listing with keyword-rich titles, quality photographs, detailed descriptions, and shipping and handling information.
The benefits to both you and the nonprofits are numerous:
- By giving through eBay’s Giving Works program, your eBay auction listing will be featured not only in the usual eBay searches but also on the eBay Giving Works page and on the “About My Nonprofit” page. If a buyer searches for nonprofits benefiting a certain cause (e.g., “Helping Animals,” “Education,” “Fighting Breast Cancer,” among others) through the “Spotlight on a Cause” page, your listing will show up if your organization’s mission matches that of the would-be buyer’s cause search.
- Your eBay listing will also automatically include a special blue and yellow ribbon and a large box above your product description highlighting your chosen nonprofit and how much of the item’s final selling price will be donated to them. Buyers are often attracted to eBay auctions that benefit charity, and final selling prices also tend to be higher on listings participating in eBay Giving Works.
- You’ll receive a credit on your Insertion and Final Value Fee equal to the percentage you donate to your nonprofit. If you choose to donate 25% of your final selling price, for example, you’ll be credited 25% of the fees. And of course, if you donate 100%, you’ll get 100% of your fees back.
- Your nonprofit is provided with an additional fundraising outlet without having to expend additional resources . EBay contracts with MissionFish, a nonprofit dedicated to assisting other nonprofits with online fundraising, to administer its Giving Works program. MissionFish processes the donation from your eBay listing and sends the nonprofit the proceeds, taking out a small percentage of the amount as a processing fee. They’ll also provide you with a receipt for tax purposes.
- You can feel good knowing that not only have you kept an unwanted or unused item from filling our landfills, you’ve also supported a worthy cause.
If you simply want to make a direct donation to your favorite charity, you can do that too through eBay Giving Works. Just search for the nonprofit on the Giving Works directory and use your PayPal account to make the donation.
